Why “Red Region?”

I get asked pretty often why I work under “Red Region Tattoos” by people who didn’t know I ran a studio of that name. I get asked just as often why my studio was called Red Region.
So here you go…
This is why I opened a studio named Red Region and why I still work under the name even after closing that shop.

First of all it fits me and how I see life here on earth.
Red Region
1: a place of eternal fire envisaged as punishment for the damned [syn: {hellfire}]

I am one of those people who feel like this world is The Red Region.

The real deal though is that I took “Red Region” from a poem.
It is one of my most beloved poems by one of the worlds greatest poets.

The Mid-World by George William (“A. E.”) Russell (1867–1935).

THIS is the red, red region
Your heart must journey through:
Your pains will here be legion
And joy be death for you.

Rejoice to-day: to-morrow
A turning tide shall flow
Through infinite tones of sorrow
To reach an equal woe.

You pass by love unheeding
To gain the goal you long—
But my heart, my heart is bleeding:
I cannot sing this song.

As a poem it is perfection. As a painting with words it is a masterpiece. Simple, short, and lovely. It describes a huge piece of my life.
I hope for you though that it doesn’t.
